The Galena Area Emergency Medical Service District is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit, volunteer, ILS emergency response ambulance service organized in 1978. Currently, we serve nine townships and three municipalities centered around historic Galena, Illinois.
Our facility is located on the campus of the Galena-Stauss Senior Center. The original facility was built in 1985. An addition in 1999 added a training lab, two offices, storage, two sleeping rooms with private baths, a staff lounge and a third ambulance bay.
Our ambulances are built by MedTech on Ford 450 chassis. Left to right above 1-Adam-20 is a 2009, 1-Adam-18 is a 1998 and 1-Adam-17 is a 2003. The vehicles are equipped with Phillips HeartStart MRx ALS Monitors capable of transmitting 12 lead ECGs and measuring a patient's oxygen saturation, blood pressure and pulse. We also have IV warmers, Doppler stethoscopes and computer aided charting/reporting on board. We host the server that transmits the 12 lead ECGs to various the hospital for four ambulance services in Jo Daviess County. In 2014 we responded to 583 calls, treating 592 patients. Additionally, we performed 21 standbys at public events and 8 firefighter rehabilitation standbys. We provide emergency transport to the Midwest Medical Center in Galena as well as Finley Hospital and Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
Our greatest resource however, is our personnel. Our volunteer men and women come from all walks of life and education. Their expertise covers the range of drivers through paramedics. We make every effort to provide each member with the latest and most up to date training.
We are associated with both the Rockford Health System in cooperation with Finley Hospital and the Mercy-Dubuque Health System. These systems provide our protocols, training lectures, and printed materials used to maintain our ILS level of proficiency.
